Title: Escape from Sobibor
Producer, Director: Live Home Video Audience: adult Length: 120 min. Subject: Holocaust Summary: In this true story, a Russian army officer is captured by the Nazis and sent to Sobibor. There he confronts the horrors of the holocaust. Most of his fellow prisoners are killed immediately, and the "lucky" ones are exploited as slave laborers. Yet, their will to fight gack remains, and with the know-how of the Russian officer, they revolt and escape. Color. 1991.

Subject: Anti-Semitism Summary: A powerful propaganda film produced by the Nazis in 1941, to convince the German public of the "terrible nature" of the Jews. Contains many stereotypes, and vivid portraits, and is very overwhelming in its persuasive powers.

Subject: Disabilities Summary: The heartwarming story of Eugene Chernyakhovsky, a boy with cerebral palsy who overcomes many challenges as he prepares for his bar mitzvah. Assisted by a team of experts and volunteers in Philadelphia, Eugene transfers his entire Torah portion to a computer that serves as his voice using only one foot. Culminating in the bar mitzvah service and celebration, at which he addresses the congregation in both English and Russian, his journey is unforgettable.

Subject: Jews in Ukraine Summary: Based on the book by Jonathan Safran Foer, this movie stars Elijah Wood as Jonathan and Eugene Hutz as his Ukrainian guide, who search for the woman who saved Jonathan's grandfather from the Nazis in 1942. Producer, Director: Safer, Morley, Narrator Audience: adult Length: 60 min. Subject: Israel -- Exodus Summary: This video is the true story of how American Jews secretly financed and crewed the Exodus 1947, the most infamous of the Aliyah Bet ships that tried to run the British blockade of Palestine, and captured world-wide attention in the process. 4500 Holocaust survivors left France for Palestine, and ultimately, were sent back to a DP camp in Germany. The movie documents the media coverage of the event.

Producer, Director: BJE/N.Y. Audience: children Length: 18 min Subject: Purim Summary: Children in Israel put on a Purim play about the story of Purim. A narrator also describes the customs and meanings of the holiday. The making of hamentashen is demonstrated, children put on costumes, and give a holiday parade. The reading of the Megillah is shown. Puppets also depict the Purim story in a series of vignettes.

A wonderful musical, nominated for 8 Academy Awards, and winner of 3 Oscars, the movie includes such classics as "If I Were a Rich Man," and "Sunrise, Sunset." Stars Topol, Norma Crane, Leonard Frey, and Molly Picon. 1971.

Title: Field Diary/ Arena of Murder
Producer, Director: Gitai, Amos Audience: adult Length: 163 min. Subject: Hebrew -- Israeli documentaries Summary: Shot in the West Bank before and during the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, "Field Diary" is 50 sequence shots from a moving car. The film's view of the "occupation" was controversial in Israel, leading to Gitai's decade-long exile from Israel. Filmed in 1982. In "Arena of Murder, Gitai investigates the assassination fo Yitzhak Rabin three weeks after the event. He travels through the country forseveral months, filming random encounters. Filmed in 1996. In Hebrew with English subtitles.

Subject: Fiction -- Juvenile Summary: This delightful animated feature continues the adventures of Fievel, the brave young mouse who starred in An American Tail. The Mousekewitz family lives in a tenement, and dreams of improving their lives. Fievel is lured out west by a crafty entrepreneur, who plans to turn the settlers into mouse-burgers, but Fievel saves the day. Rated G. 1991.
