Videos and dvd's must be checked out IN PERSON, but you can call the Learning Center to check on availability, at 847 432-8900, ext. 242.

Title: From Vienna to Jerusalem: The Century of Teddy Kollek
Producer, Director: Landwer, Willy Audience: all Length: 60 min. Subject: Biography -- Kollek, Teddy Summary: Teddy Kollek was Jerusalem's mayor from 1965 - 1993. This video traces the life and achievements of the man who fostered the development of Jerusalem, from a small divided town into a thriving modern capital. His personal history began in Vienna, as a Jewish activist, and he later helped to found Kibbutz Ein Gev. This film profiles Mr. Kollek, a man of passion and determination who helped shape the land of Israel.

Subject: Hebrew Alphabet Summary: This video introduces the letter aleph, using puppets, scenes of Israel, songs and vignettes. Included are the song "Adon Olam", a story of Abraham and the visit of the three angels, mitzvot, the city of Ashkelon, and the concept of loving your neighbor as yourself. Appropriate for children ages 5 and up.

Subject: Hebrew Alphabet Summary: The letters of the Hebrew alphabet and primary lessons in Judaism are taught through music and stories, puppets and animation. This video teaches the letter Bet, about houses, and the Beit HaMikdash. It also shows Hebrew vowels, and visits with a Sofer. The ten commandments are shown. It is very orthodox and hasidic in tone.

Subject: Holocaust -- Italy Summary: In a haunting love story set in pre-war Italy, the wealthy Finzi- Contini family welcomes other Jewish families to their estate as a refuge from outside oppression. A love story ensues, and as the war looms, the lovers are locked in a race against time and fate. Exquisitely photographed this film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1971. English subtitles.

Title: Gates of Jerusalem: A History of the Holy City

Subject: Jerusalem Summary: This video reveals the history of Jerusalem, having been overrun on 40 separate occasions, and destroyed 18 times. Narrated by Richard Kiley, the video traces the history of Jerusalem, and Israel, from the time of Abraham to the 21st century. In Part I, we visit four gates of the city that represent the spiritual gateways of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Part 2 takes us to the second four gates, including the one that leads tot the Temple Mount.

Subject: Customs and Ceremonies Summary: This movie tackles the subject of the displacement of cultural traditions by showing the"ritual"of making gefilte fish. The grandmother buys a live fish, to be sure it's fresh, the mother uses her food processor to chop the fish, the daughter (and film-maker) wrestles with a jar of store-bought fish. Humorous, delightful and thought-provoking.

Stories include Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah and the Ark, Abraham's relationship with Hagar and Sarah, Rebecca's deception with Isaac, and Joseph's exile in Egypt. A fascinating series of discussions.

Hobson's novel of a writer pretending to be Jewish who discovers anti-semitism. Starring Celeste Holm, Gregory Peck, Anne Revere, Jane Wyatt, Dorothy McGuire, this film was a daring subject for its time. Filmed in 1947, screenplay by Moss Hart. An excellent movie.
DVD includes audio commentary by Celeste Holm, June Havoc and Richard Schickel; AMC Backstory, theatrical trailer.

Title: Getting Jerusalem Together

Subject: Jerusalem Summary: Produced in 1985, this video is an excellent archaeological and historical survey of Jerusalem. It is presented using drawings and video footage of archaeological remains in the Jerusalem area.

Title: Go for Zucker!
Producer, Director: Levy, Dani Audience: adult Length: 91 min. Subject: Fiction Summary: Hustler Jaeckie Zucker is in debt, facing jail and ruin. His mother passes away, leaving him an inheritance, but before he can cash in he must reconcile with his Orthodox brother Samuel, who is coming for the shiva. Zucker must try to "pass" as observant, reconcile with his brother, and still compete in a high-stakes pool tournament. Wacky and sweet. In German, with English subtitles.

Subject: Yiddish Fiction Summary: The famous play by Jacob Gordin, "God, Man & Devil," is an adaptation based on the classic play "Faust'. The movie is about the constant wager between God and Satan. Here we see the devastating results of a man who sells his soul to the devil, and loses all of his Jewish morals for greed. Filmed in theU.S. in 1949, this was one of the last Yiddish full-length features to be made.

Title: Golda Meir Remembered by Elie Wiesel

Subject: Biography -- Meir, Golda Summary: This film is a retrospective look at the Prime Minister of Israel as Elie Wiesel shares his memories of her, and footage of conversations he had with her. 1971. Filmed 7 years before her death, and before the Yom Kippur War.

Title: Golden Age of Second Ave.
Producer, Director: Cantor, Arthur Audience: adult Length: 67 min. Subject: Yiddish Theater Summary: Narrated by the late Herschel Bernardi, this wonderful video contains unique old footage as it traces the history of Yiddish theater in America, from its roots in Ellis Island, until the present. Parts of the film are a walking tour of sections of New York, and excerpts of Yiddish productions are included, with appearances by Molly Picon and Paul Muni.
