Videos and dvd's must be checked out IN PERSON, but you can call the Learning Center to check on availability, at 847 432-8900, ext. 242.

Title: Golden Voices of Israel
Producer, Director: Israel Music Audience: adult Length: 60 min. Subject: Cantorial Music Summary: This dvd contains rare footage of Jewish liturgical masterpiees from the early 20th century. Includes Cantor Yossele Rosenblatt, Cantor Moishe Oysher's films, Cantor Samuel Malavsky and his family choir as well as Cantors Shlisky, Rotmian and others.

Title: Golem, Le
Producer, Director: Duvivier, Julien Audience: all Length: 96 min. Subject: Golem Summary: This film classic was shot on location in pre-war Czechoslovakia, and depicts the legend about the golem, a popular medieval figure from Talmudic lore, a powerful body without a soul, who could protect and defend the Jews. The film was shot in 1935, and is in black and white, in French, with English subtitles.

Subject: Golem Summary: Rabbi Loew, in Prague, creates a man of clay, a Golem, to protect the Jewish inhabitants from persecution. Starring Paul Wegener, Lyda Salmonova, Hans Sturm, and Lothar Muthel, this silent movie was filmed in black and white and originally released in 1920.

Title: Good-bye Columbus
Producer, Director: Roth, Philip Audience: adult Length: 105 min. Subject: Fiction Summary: This unorthodox and bittersweet comedy received an Oscar nomination for best screenplay based on another medium. Roth's social satire is brought to life as Richard Benjamin and Ali McGraw play Neil and Brenda, who try to cross class lines amidst kisses and her parents stiff opposition. A poignant and funny comedy. Rated PG. 1969.

Subject: Soviet Jewry Summary: An excellent video showing what it is like for children to immigrate to the United States from Russia. Five children are interviewed, and describe what it was like to live, go to school, and shop in Russia. They then describe their feelings and reactions to coming to the United States. An excellent trigger film.

Title: Grandma Didn't Wave Back

Subject: Elderly Summary: Based on the novel by Rose Blue, this is the story of ten year old Debbie, whose grandmother begins to lose her memory and finally must be taken to a nursing hom. Debbie must come to grips, first, with her grandmother's frailties, and finally with her being moved from her home. A poignant depiction by Molly icon as the grandmother.

Subject: Prayer -- Shaharit Summary: This is a documentary of a Conservative Shabbat morning service, where congregants pray with beautiful cantorial melodies and share their moving personal stories of how their heartfelt supplications have drawn them closer to God, transforming their daily routines and relationships at home, at work and in their communities.

Subject: Cantorial music Summary: In 1931, during the Golden Age of cantorial art, the New York film director produced "The Voice of Israel", the only known visual and sound record of some of the most famous cantors from 1910 to 1040. Dr. Max Wohlberg introduces this 1990 video, which uses footage from the 1931 film. It is a tribute to those legendary cantors, a rare treasure.

Title: Great Dictator

Subject: Fiction Summary: This celebrated Charlie Chaplin classic was honored in 2000 as one of the American Film Institute's Top 100 American Comedies. Chaplin plays dual roles of Hitler-like Adenoid Hynkel, and a Jewish barber who is a dead-ringer look-alike for the dictator. Puns, sight gags and slapstick abound as Chaplin skewers fascism, balancing his attack with scenes of a ghetto in the clutches of storm-trooping terror. Immortal bits include Hynkel's dance with a globe, the upside-down flight and Hynkel and a Mussolini-like Jack Oakie madly cranking their barber chairs higher and higher. Great comedy meets great filmmaking passion in this classic. In black and white.

Subject: Purim Summary: All in Hebrew, this cartoon is about a boy who finds a "ra'ashon" (gragger), which only works when he says the word "Haman." The video is accompanied by a teacher's guide, and an audiotape of the dialogue. It is excellent for second or third year Hebrew students.

Subject: Hanukkah Summary: A dreidel is in need of a friend to play with, and he goes from house to house searching for his friend. Using animation, this story is all is basic Hebrew, and provides a good review for second year Hebrew students. It includes a teacher's guide and an audiotape for oral review.

Title: Half the Kingdom
Producer, Director: Kol Ishah Productions Audience: adult Length: 59 min. Subject: Feminism Summary: This 1990 video, co-produced by the National Film Board of Canada, is a fascinating exploration with a group of women who search for their own female views of Judaism. Their points of view differ -- one is quite observant, one is an atheist, one a social activist, one a rabbi. The video also observes the "Women of the Wall" movement in Israel.

These two men work side by side to build a dream ranch in the Galilee. Tensions flair between the Jews and Arabs in the area, and tempers explode. Recommended for mature audiences. A winner at the Locarno International Film Festival. In Hebrew, with English subtitles.
