Videos and dvd's must be checked out IN PERSON, but you can call the Learning Center to check on availability, at 847 432-8900, ext. 242.

Title: Jews in Arab Countries
Producer, Director: Verite Film Productions Audience: teen - adult Length: 28 min. Subject: Jews in Arab Countries Summary: This film focuses on Jewish refugees from Muslim Arab countries. Their unique history, customs and problems are discussed, in a thorough and informative manner. Questions are raised as to how many Jews still live in the Arab countries, and how they are treated, particularly in light of world press responses to Israeli treatment of Palestinians.

Subject: Jews in Djerba Summary: Djerba, an island off the southeast coast of Tunisia, is home for a small and little known Jewish community. According to their tradition, Djerban Jews see their community as a living remnant of the Babylonian Jewish community created after the destruction of King Solomon's Temple over 2500 years ago. The traditions of this community are explored in this remarkable video.

Subject: Jews in Poland Summary: Between 1938 and 1939, the two filmmakers visited six Jewish communities in Poland, in an effort to record the vitality of Jewish life. Their film is one of the last visual accounts of a once vibrant world. The film of Lodz was lost, but the remaining five are recorded on this video. Black and white.

Title: Jonah
Producer, Director: Hanna-Barbera Audience: children Length: 30 min. Subject: Bible -- Animated Summary: Jonah, now an elderly man, tells his tale of how G-d awakened him one night and told him to go to Ninevah and preach repentance. Jonah sets out on the journey, but goes by ship to Tarshish. He is thrown from the ship and lives in the belly of a great fish for three days until he repents. An excellent introduction to the Bible story.

Subject: Bible -- Animated Summary: Jason Robards narrates the story of Jonah, who rejects G-d and is swallowed by a whale, only to learn the lesson of forgiveness and obedience. The video is a series of paintings by Jeffrey Smith, and is accompanied by musice by George McDichian.

Subject: Bible -- Personalities -- Joseph Summary: Ben Kingsley is Potiphar, Martin Landau is Jacob, Paul Mercurio is Joseph, and Lesley Ann Warren is Potiphar's wife, in this made-for-television movie about Joseph. The film begins with Joseph's relationship with his brothers, who throw him into a pit, leaving him for dead, but he is later taken to Egypt where he works for Potiphar, and ultimately becomes vizier of Egypt.

Subject: Bible -- Animated Summary: A cartoon depiction of the story of Joseph, the coat of many colors, his brothers' animosity toward him, his travel to Egypt, rise to power, and ultimate confrontation with his brothers in Egypt. Very well done. The story is told as seen through the eyes of "time travelers." Appropriate for ages 4 and up, and but may require adult explanation.

The production stars Donny Osmond, Maria Friedman, Richard Attenborough, and Joan Collins. A lively and colorful journey through ancient Egypt, the play follows the rags to riches story of Joseph, his eleven brothers, and his coat of many colors. Great music, enjoyable for the whole family.

A few children who survived tell their story in this haunting video.
