Tuesday 8th Grade Hebrew Conversation I
5768
Teachers: Mazel Levin; Noah Rosen
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is an entry-level conversational Hebrew course. It will focus on basic Hebrew grammar and common vocabulary that could be used on a daily basis. Language immersion techniques will be used in supplemental units that will include holidays, foods and their preparation, colors, clothing, the weather, map skills and directions. We will do hands-on learning in each of these units to reinforce classroom learning.
We are committed to offering dynamic classes in an environment appropriate for learning. Our classes are open to any student who wants to study Hebrew and we are very responsive to our students’ individual needs. Therefore adjustments to this curriculum can be made in order for students to achieve at their maximum potential.
GOALS FOR STUDENTS:
The goals of this class are twofold. First, we will work to increase the student’s conversational abilities by providing a firm foundation in Israeli Hebrew as native speakers speak it in informal contexts. Students will be introduced to more complicated grammatical forms so as to give them the tools needed to build a more complex vocabulary.
It is our hope that students who are especially conscientious and who apply themselves to their Hebrew studies, will achieve a level of proficiency in this course that will allow them to place out of level one Hebrew next year in the public high schools. With this goal in mind, textbooks and materials used in this course are compatible with those used in level one Hebrew classes at the public high schools.
ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS:
In order to get the most out of our Hebrew program, students need to attend regularly and to complete all assigned work. Homework will be assigned each week (usually not more than an hour per week) and assignments will comprise written review and preparation for the upcoming class.
Students are required to come to class prepared with completed assignments, with all course materials and ready to focus. Students are expected to take an active role in class activities and discussions. Together, the students should create an atmosphere of mutual assistance and respect. |
