Sokol Hebrew High School Discussions On Judaism Alex Smoler Spring 5768
In this class, I am offering a venue for students to raise questions of Jewish subject matter that they would like to learn more about. To initially stimulate discussion I will “plant seeds”, bringing up subjects that are relevant and affect the adolescent life of the students.
Our studies will involve taking an in-depth look at the topics through many traditional and modern Jewish sources and discussion, over the span of several classes, if need be. I will make every attempt to provide students with full and accurate answers to their questions and enrich their understanding of modern Conservative Jewish practices and beliefs. I will also expose them to more traditional and liberal approaches to the issues at-hand, nevertheless the emphasis will be on Conservative practice and approach. As a result of this process, I mean to encourage the class to take pride in the Jewish tradition that has guided us from our beginning and that continues to do so, today. Hopefully, the lessons learned from this course will remain meaningful to students, throughout their lives.
For the most part, I expect that students will want to share information from this class with their parents. However, if any student requests privacy regarding their particular question, all of us in the class will respect the confidence.
Due to the special nature of this class, I have rather firm expectations for the students: 1. Regular attendance is required; this is not a class where students can do make-up projects for credit. 2. Proper attitude and decorum along with respect for other students are essential. 3. Attention to the subject matter and participation in our discussions. |
