History

USY is our youth group for kids in grades 9-12. In addition to our local chapter, USY in an international organization affiliated with our region, CHUSY, and the youth programs of the Conservative movement. Programs are planned by a board of USYers with the help of our USY advisor.
Check out some of our USY projects...
* 1.5 Million Penny Project: Currently, our youth community has undertaken a special project of giving tzedakah known as the 1.5 Million Penny Project. This project is intended to commemorate the children who were lost in the Holocaust. Most estimates give that number as 1.5 million, and that is the number of pennies that our children have committed to raising in memory of those lives lost. We have placed penny jars around our synagogue to collect the pennies and when we have reached our goal, the money will be donated to the Holocaust Memorial in Skokie.
* Teen Minyan: We run monthly, spirited teen-led services for teens at Beth El and their friends. And they always include a free meal after the service!
* Turkey Dance: For more than 40 years, BEANS USY has been running the annual Turkey Dance, a regional dance the night before Thanksgiving. This popular event has been known to draw teenagers from all over the Chicago area, as wel as USY alumni.
* Purim Carnival and Hamantaschen Baking: BEANS USYers are quite busy around Purim time! We run a carnival for the entire congregation and bake hamantaschen to sell, both of which raise money for our tzedakah fund, Tikun Olam.
* Peer Buddy: New in 2009-2010, we started a Peer Buddy program, which creates a warm and welcoming community for kids with special needs.
